On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the African American civil rights movement reaches its high-water mark when Martin Luther King, Jr., speaks to about 250,000 people attending the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This Day in History:

Battle of Brooklyn

During the American Revolution, British forces under General William Howe defeat Patriot forces under General George Washington at the Battle of Brooklyn in New York.
On August 22, Howe's large army landed on Long Island, hoping to capture New York City and gain control of the Hudson River, a victory that would divide the rebellious colonies in half. On August 27, the Red Coats marched against the Patriot position at Brooklyn Heights, overcoming the Americans at Gowanus Pass and then outflanking the entire Continental Army. Howe failed to follow the advice of his subordinates and storm the redoubts at Brooklyn Heights, and on August 29 General Washington ordered a brilliant retreat to Manhattan by boat, thus saving the Continental Army from capture. At the Battle of Brooklyn, the Americans suffered 1,000 casualties to the British loss of only 400 men. On September 15, the British captured New York City. (via History.com)

The 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, is formally adopted into the U.S. Constitution by proclamation of Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby. The amendment was the culmination of more than 70 years of struggle by woman suffragists. Its two sections read simply: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" and "Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."

International Red Cross Founded

The Geneva Convention of 1864 for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick of Armies in the Field is adopted by 12 nations meeting in Geneva. The agreement, advocated by Swiss humanitarian Jean-Henri Dunant, called for nonpartisan care to the sick and wounded in times of war and provided for the neutrality of medical personnel. It also proposed the use of an international emblem to mark medical personnel and supplies. In honor of Dunant's nationality, a red cross on a white background--the Swiss flag in reverse--was chosen. In 1901, Dunant was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize. (via History.com)

August 17 - Bubba!!!

Happy Birthday Ian!!!

I met Ian when his and my family moved next door to each other. The neighborhood was a new development so there were not a lot of people living there and not a lot of kids. I quickly became best friends with his sister and through that Ian and I became so close.

My favorite memories of Ian are from the times we all lived on Emily Circle. We would play night games, make our own movies, started a dance troupe (Ian was our official DJ) and make fun optical courses in each other's houses. I will never forget those times and will always consider Ian to be more of a brother than a friend.

I love you so much Ian and hope that life is treating you well.

I met Bryce because he is the boyfriend of my good friend Brandon. We became close once he FINALLY moved to Chicago!

My favorite memories of Bryce are from Pride this year. We got into many shenanigans and had an absolute blast drinking, watching the parade and prancing around boys-town!

Love you!!

I met Monica through my current work at the Chicago Human Rhythm Project.

My favorite memories of her are from working at CHRP. The stress levels are always at an all time high here but we seem to make it through the day and still find time to have fun.

The Birth of Hip Hop

Like any style of music, hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different artists, but there's a case to be made that it came to life precisely on this day in 1973, at a birthday party in the recreation room of an apartment building in the west Bronx, New York City. The location of that birthplace was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, and the man who presided over that historic party was the birthday girl's brother, Clive Campbell—better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop.
